Barlig is among the 11 municipalities of Mountain Province. This isolated municipality accomodates rather intact mossy forests with oak trees, tree ferns and orchids. Benguet Pine forest are also widely scattered. Heights are between 1,275 meters (Lias) and 1,650 meters (Lingoy). This is one of the sites where you defintiely need someone who can introduce you to the people in Lias (barangay captain) and a family who will accomodate you. This is not the popular tourist destination but the people here are extremely friendly and would help you with everything you need. I spent three nights in the house of the Cofin family in Lias Village. Mr. Romeo Cofin would guide you around and has a good knowledge of the local birds and mammals in the area. It's possible (advisable!) to stay in his hut at the edge of Lias forest. (courtesy of philippinebirdingtrip.blogspost.com)
Barlig has 11 barangays which include:
  • Lias Silangan
  • Lias Kanluran
  • Chupac
  • Fiangtin
  • Kaleo
  • Latang
  • Lingoy
  • Lunas
  • Macalana
  • Ogo-og
  • Gawana
PERSONAL TIPS IN SPENDING VACATION IN BARLIG SPECIFICALLY IN LIAS (courtesy: philippinebirdingtrip.blogspot.com)
  1. Bring some food and small gifts for the family you are going to stay with. They will really appreaciate it! Try to bring some articles that are not easy to find in the local sari-sari stores; brown sugar and fresh bread are always good.
  2. Avoid the Holy Week! Big groups of mountaineers and local tourists usually visit Barlig during holidays. I walked from Lias to Barlig town proper for about 3-4 hours and my backpack was transported and offloaded at the Sea World Inn by the jeepney that passed Lias going to Barlig town proper and Bontoc. An excellent site for birding could be the nearby Mount Amuyao (2,628 meters) . It will take about 6 hours to reach the summit where you will find two transmitters. Sightings of Racquet-tails and Bleeding-heart Pigeons (Flame-breasted Fruit-dove) are found.
  3. Transport from Baguio City, via Bontoc, to Lias,Barlig. Bus (d' rising sun) - slaughterhouse terminal in Baguio City to Bonto (6 hours). There are few busses a dayf rom Baguio City going to Bontoc. To be sure of transport from Bontoc to Barlig, it is advisable to to take early bus (5:30 am) from Baguio City. The jeepney going to Lias, Barlig is located near the Chico river. Bontoc to Lias is 3 hours. The jeepneys going to Barlig municipality will leave Bontoc early in the afternoon (around 3:00 pm-4:00pm

1. Lias Location: Lias, Barlig, Mountain Province (Luzon). Abstract: It takes about hours and days from Lias village to Lias forest. During the first hour, you will walk on narrow paths along rice terraces with views on the Tanudan River. The rest of the time, you walk in and along good forest. The trail will end at a group of huts (Kangao) at the edge of the forest (courtesy  philippinebirdingtrips.blogspot.com)
